The complete set of clamshell (white) goishi seems to be a composite of two different, incomplete sets, as 95 of the stones have a thickness of ~0.29", while the other 85 are slightly thinner, with a thickness of only ~0.19". Included with this board is a full set of goishi (stones) stored in two kitani ("japanese-style," referring to their shape) goke (wooden bowls). This is because ki-ura boards, which are cut from the core of the kaya log, mostly exhibit straight grain lines on their playing surface which run parallel to the length of the board in a manner similar to masame boards, with the exception of a singular band of itame (or "flat grains") that runs down the center. Although itame boards are generally considered inferior to masame ("rift-cut" or "straight cut") boards, ki-ura boards like this one are the most prized of the various kinds of itame.
